Comic Art

A great eBay find, which I spotted on the last day.  This cover painting to Legend Of Grimjack Volume 8 from IDW is a stunning piece from a great artist.  It’s graphite pencil, watercolour and gouache on Strathmore board.

After lots of scanning/editing attempts, I’ve given up and am using the image from the eBay auction.  This is a double spread from the Cody Starbuck one-shot that is detailed more extensively in the previous post.  The actual image has a thick black border all around it like the others, but doesn’t have any page numbers, so without the actual comic makes it’s a mystery.

Picked up these pages on eBay; very early Howard Chaykin work from the Cody Starbuck one-shot published by Star*Reach in 1978.  Really clean, and the beginnings of Chaykin’s visual style.  There’s a third page, but it’s a double spread and I had to scan it in three pieces and am having some trouble stitching it back together electronically.

The last pieces from the Toronto Comicon.  The inker of these pages, Dan Davis, was at the show selling at very reasonable prices.  This holds to my belief that inkers are always the best way to get pages at great prices.

Saw this at a comic dealer’s table at the Toronto Comicon.  Retailers occasionally have a page or two that they’ve acquired along the way, but this one was nice.  I really enjoy the style of it, but had to look up the title at comics.org as I completely missed it.  Inks by John Paul Leon, another favourite of mine.  I’ve been debating about putting inkers on this site, which would mean double posting the pages under both names. 

Mike Perkins was at Toronto Comicon along with his art dealer.  Lots of pages available at good prices.  I picked these two for the shading and detail, even though they don’t contain Captain America.

A great local Toronto artist who I was excited to find at the Toronto Comicon.  I came across his web site last month and requested a Dr. Fate commission (what a surprise).  In the meantime I picked this up.

More Toronto Comicon treasures.  Watt had a small portfolio of finished pieces he was selling, and was doing free sketches.  I was at the show two days and went back to get the two sketches: Matt’s style is simple and elegant so these quick sketches really come through.  I spotted this Thor coloured piece and snatched it right away.

A commission from the Toronto Comicon.  Oeming was doing some really nice watercolour work at the show so I asked for a Thor piece, since he’s doing the backup stories in Classic Avengers.  As well his convention commissions are very reasonable.

Another treasure from the Toronto Comicon: a Darwyn Cooke Dr. Fate sketch. I’m a huge Cooke fan and love his artwork; unfortunately it never comes up on eBay and his dealer’s prices are pretty high. Last year he was doing free profile (head and shoulder) sketches, this year he was charging $50 for the same, or $100 for a full figure.
